Build and paddle your own canoe – Southampton City College

Southampton’s City College challenges young people to build a canoe from scratch in five weeks, under direction from the college’s Maritime Technology Centre, before racing them at the centre in Woolston. They race the canoe, which has to be big enough to hold two people, against other teams on the River Itchen. There are awards for the overall best single crew, best double crew and best-dressed boat and crew. All students who take part also receive a medal and certificate of attendance.
The initiative introduces young people to the water, and gives them basic skills in boat building, maintenance and safety. City College have provided each team with a manual to help them build the boats and the School/College will fund all the materials needed. The students, from 17 schools and 3 colleges in 2006, use the project as part of their studies. Brian Mill, the manager of the Woolston centre visits the schools leading up to the event to make sure they are on schedule and provide any build advice should they need it.
