Newcastle Marine Careers Fair a major success

The tenth Annual International Marine Careers Fair, held on February 6th and 7th in the Kings Hall was the largest yet. Thirty companies from the UK, Canada, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Norway attended, with others sending vacancy information. Over 200 students, from Marine and other disciplines visited the company stands.

All marine sectors were represented, including shipbuilding, shiprepair, oil and gas, pipelines, sub-sea engineering, consultancy and classification societies. Many discussions between employers and students took place during an informal evening buffet, attended by 120 participants.

Dr Peter Wright, Fair co-ordinator for the School of Marine Science and Technology, said "The number of companies who came to the Fair shows the huge demand for engineers and scientists, and the scope of Marine Industry. Newcastle is clearly producing quality engineering graduates, in the many disciplines the Marine industry so urgently needs".

Companies were impressed by the quality and enthusiasm of the students, who are sought after for vacation placements as well as graduate employment.

Keir Gravil, studying Naval Architecture, said" I am committed to a marine career, and the Fair has confirmed my choice and demonstrated the astonishing variety of jobs on offer"

Ian Braidwood, of Teekay Shipping was impressed. "We are an international company, based in Vancouver, and we have met a lot of high quality students with potential to fill many of our needs."

The large attendance shows the strength and importance of the marine industries in total. The use of the sea, for transport, leisure, energy and fishing increases every year. Over 90% of all international trade is carried in over ninety thousand ocean-going vessels, from massive bulk cargo ships to the smallest sea-canal barges.

There are more ships than ever, including millions of fishing vessels and workboats of all types. Every year entirely new ships appear and there is continuous development of existing types to improve performance and economy. The current boom in cruising has led to the development of a new generation of luxury passenger vessels and the demand for passenger transport to high-speed ferries.

The School of Marine Science and Technology at Newcastle University is the broadest based in the UK. A degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Offshore Engineering, Small Craft or Marine Biology can lead to a career in one of the many aspects of the marine sector.

"This will give me plenty of more opportunities to take photos", he commented. His wife Liz, who will accompany him, is looking forward to the sunbathing the relaxing!
