Webships – the Marine Society brings ships into the classroom

The Marine Society & Sea Cadets, the nation's largest maritime charity, pioneered the concept of “webships” several years ago, and continues to develop and enhance the concept.

Webships offer a unique insight into contemporary life at sea through the medium most favoured by young people - the internet.

The ship sends back email updates on its progress covering far more than simply factual data. Also included are anecdotes of everyday happenings and places visited/passed. Everyone onboard is encouraged to make a contribution. Posted on the website with free access for all, the whole despatch is a fascinating window into life at sea today.

There are currently two webships, RFA Wave Ruler and BP's LNG carrier, British Trader. The enhanced webship coverage has been developed with the support and cooperation of RFA, BP Shipping and the Merchant Navy Training Board.

A team of professional teachers prepares supplementary content that links directly to the National Curriculum. This increases its relevance and appeal to the nation's 28,000 schools. The site is also vigorously promoted to the key internet portals accessed by schools and the wider education sector, thereby ensuring as wide an audience as possible.

It provides factfiles from the Key Stage 3 and 4 National Curriculum as subject and cross-curricular educational resources.
