Schools Engineering Challenge - Harwich Haven Gateway
Schools Engineering Challenge - Harwich Haven Gateway, a moving experience

Felixstowe is the UK's largest container port, where Sea Vision partner, the Haven Gateway Partnership set local schools the task of moving a maritime container for themselves.
This initiative, aimed at pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4 (aged 14 to 16), used scaleddown models of a 40-foot container, made by Modern Apprentices at the Port of Felixstowe. The pupils had to create a machine or piece of equipment capable of lifting the model and transporting it between two points five metres apart, including negotiating a 25 cm barrier. Haven Gateway gave each school £250 to build the machine and they had to present a full set of accounts detailing how the money was spent and show the full design brief for the project at the July grand final.
"The Engineering Challenge is designed to promote engineering as a career pathway, challenge students' views and understanding of engineering's role in society, encourage girls to participate in engineering and encourage collaboration between students," said Richard Morton, project manager of the Haven Gateway's Maritime and Logistics Skills Centre. "We also want to establish a network of teachers in the Haven Gateway sub-region to collaborate on the long-term development of engineering in schools, particularly in the port and logistics sector."
