Nelson's ship to be on the fourth plinth | |
| A replica of Nelson's ship HMS Victory will be appearing on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square later this year. The model of the ship will be inside a 5m (16ft) by 2.5m (8.2ft) acrylic bottle on the plinth, and will go on show until 2012. Nelson's ship will appear after Anthony Gormleys' 'One & Other' and after a statue of Sir Keith Parks. |

UK Maritime Heritage Forum 2009 | |
| The UK Maritime Heritage Forum will be held on 2 & 3 December 2009 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. All UKMCS, MCG and ACNHS members are invited to attend, as well as representatives from all maritime museums nationally, historic vessels, museums and archives with maritime holdings, and representatives from maritime history societies. |

| Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope KCB OBE ADC has become the professional head of the Royal Navy and Chairman of the Navy Board. He is responsible to the Secretary of State for the fighting effectiveness, efficiency and morale of the Naval Service. As a member of the Defence Council he supports the Secretary of State in the management and direction of the Armed Forces. |

IMO meeting tackles greenhouse gas emissions from ships | |
| The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has held a meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC). The meeting attracted representatives from across the world to discuss ways to minimise the environmental impact of shipping. The discussions were wide ranging and covered a package of interim and voluntary technical and operational measures to reduce greenhouse gases. |

Surfing champion joins lifeguards | |
| Welsh Women's Surfing Champion Beth Mason has joined the team of RNLI lifeguards patrolling four of Swansea's beaches this summer. Beth aged 19, will be one of 23 lifeguards covering Bracelet Bay, Langland Bay, Caswell Bay and Port Eynon beaches. The lifeguards will provide safety information and first aid as well as carrying out rescues throughout the peak season. |

New science reveals 40% increase in North Sea cod stocks | |
| Conservation efforts by fishermen are working, says Seafish, the authority on Seafood, with research revealing that the number of cod dying is down by 15 per cent and the number of spawning cod in the North Sea is up by 40 per cent. New data released by ICES (www.ices.dk), the independent international scientific body, revealed the improved status of North Sea cod stocks. |

Dolphin 'super-pod' sighting | |
| A huge pod of a dolphin species has been spotted in the Moray Firth, suggesting that dolphin populations are moving increasingly further north in search of food and breeding grounds as a result of climate change. It was estimated that more than 400 short-beaked common dolphins were sighted, in a massive migration northwards into the North Sea, by scientists and volunteers from Earthwatch. |

South West named global leader for marine energy | |
| The South West will become a world centre for wave and tidal energy under plans published by the UK Government. Designated as the UK's first Low Carbon Economic Area because of its strength in marine energy, the Government will make £19.5 million available as part of a £100 million two-year investment programme in marine energy projects including the wave hub. |
