Working with Schools – Hints for Sea Vision Partners

Introduction

These hints are aimed at Sea Vision partner organisations to provide encouragement, support and advice in creating productive links with schools. They draw on the experience of national, regional and sub regional groupings in working with schools on curriculum projects and similar activities.

Many Sea Vision partners feel that it is important to engage with schools to help raise the profile of the maritime sector and revive our understanding of its importance to our lives – economically, environmentally, socially and for work and career purposes. Partners also report that achieving this is difficult, not least because of the demands placed on schools by National Curriculum delivery and a raft of government initiatives.

These hints cover 14 case studies of successful work between schools and maritime organisations, and as such provide examples of good practice and useful suggestions for how to gain an 'in' to local schools. Common success factors include:

• a targeted approach.
• long term relationships with schools
• strong linkage to curricula
• planning ahead
• allocation of sufficient time
